Purpose of Mediation

Mediation is intended to help people resolve issues in a less formal setting than court.  If parties have any unresolved issues in their divorce, one session of mediation is mandatory before they go to court.  I like to provide an emotionally safe environment in which parties can discuss issues freely and calmly.  Although divorce issues are very emotional, if parties can remain calm, they can find better solutions and make better decisions.  Court proceedings can be adversarial, but in mediation it is more like we are working together to find solutions to the problems.  Mediation is a cheaper and calmer way to resolve disputes before, or instead of, going to court.  In mediation the clients are in control of the outcome of the case.
